From January to September 2022, China is the largest market for South African fiber exports, with a share of 36.32%. During the period, it exported $103.848 million worth of fiber for a total shipment of $285.924 million. Africa is developing its domestic textile industry, but China is a huge market for additional fiber, especially cotton stocks.
Despite being the largest market, Africa’s exports to China are highly volatile. From January to September 2022, South Africa’s exports to China fell 45.69% year-on-year to US$103.848 million from US$191.218 million in the same period last year. Compared with the export in January-September 2020, the export increased by 36.27%.
Exports rose 28.1 percent to $212.977 million in January-September 2018 but fell 58.75 percent to $87.846 million in January-September 2019. Exports soared again by 59.21% to $139.859 million in January-September 2020.
Between January and September 2022, South Africa exported fiber worth $38.862 million (13.59%) to Italy, $36.072 million (12.62%) to Germany, $16.963 million (5.93%) to Bulgaria and $16.963 million (5.93%) to Mozambique exported US$11.498 million (4.02%) .
