Sri Lanka’s apparel and textile exports to grow by 22.93% in 2021

According to data from the Sri Lanka Bureau of Statistics, Sri Lanka’s apparel and textile exports will reach US$5.415 billion in 2021, an increase of 22.93% over the same period. Although the export of clothing increased by 25.7%, the export of woven fabrics increased by 99.84%, of which the export to the UK increased by 15.22%.

In December 2021, the export revenue of clothing and textiles increased by 17.88% over the same period to US$531.05 million, of which clothing was 17.56% and woven fabrics 86.18%, showing a strong export performance.

Sri Lanka’s exports worth US$15.12 billion in 2021, when the data was released, the country’s trade minister praised exporters for their contribution to the economy despite having to deal with unprecedented economic conditions and assured them of more support in 2022 to reach 200 billion dollar target.

At the Sri Lanka Economic Summit in 2021, some industry insiders said that the goal of Sri Lanka’s garment industry is to increase its export value to US$8 billion by 2025 by increasing investment in the local supply chain. , and only about half are eligible for Generalized Preferential Tariff (GSP+), a standard that deals with whether clothing is sufficiently sourced from the country that applies for the preference.
